New Softcover For Dust City!

This fall (Sep 15, 2011) marks the release of the softcover edition of Dust City. Often with a new edition of a book, it’s common for publishers to tinker with the original—the cover, I mean, not the words.

So I was a little apprehensive when my editor sent an email with the first comps for a new cover. I had loved the hardcover design (by Natalie Souza, who also did the covers for both editions of Zorgamazoo) and I was hoping it wouldn’t change for the soft. To be honest, I didn’t think Dust City’s original design could be improved.

Well, turns out I was wrong. Check it out:

This cover art was done by Hugh D’Andrade, who couldn’t be a better fit. The quirky, slightly rutted letters; the stylized wolf; the hint of a teeming city below him; the trees (deadwoods, of course) rising up to fill the page. All amazing.

Hugh has done a whole bunch of stellar dust jackets (no pun intended), as well as some very swish concert posters for the likes of Rupa and the April Fishes, among others. Needless to say, I’m honoured. You can see more of his work over at his website. Thanks, Hugh!

Also thanks to my editors and the design team at Razorbill and Penguin Books. Can’t wait to see the final product…
